Esquire strikes a porter who protects a woman with a child

On Tuesday after the Feast of St. Luke [i.e. on 20 October 1321], John de Harwe, a porter, was found dead of an unnatural death in a private room in the parish of St. Martin, in the Vintry Ward, which he rented from Robert de Pelham, a candlemaker. The coroner and sheriff went there and diligently inquired how it happened. The investigative jury said that on the preceding Monday afternoon, a certain Thomas Attechirch, esquire to the Earl of Arundel and an unknown man were riding together through Thames Street towards the Tower. When they were opposite the house of the widow Olive Sorrowless, in the parish of St. Botolph, Thomas Attechirch nearly threw a woman carrying a child in her arms to the ground with his horse. John de Harwe begged them to ride more carefully. This moved Thomas to anger and he immediately drew his sword, striking John on his right side inflicting a mortal wound, two inches long and five inches deep. The wounded John continued to the said solar, where he received his ecclesiastical rights and lived until Tuesday morning. In addition to Thomas, John, and the unknown man and woman, many passers-by were present whose names are unknown. Thomas and the unknown man immediately fled towards the Tower, but where they went or who received them they know not. Thomas Attechirch had no chattels except the horse on which he took flight. The sheriff was instructed to arrest Thomas and all unknown persons who were present at the time.
