What happens next fully demonstrates the sorry state of the Eastern Roman army. The old strong man of the East Aspar the Alan, who had made and broken several emperors already, was finally assassinated in ad 471
and with him fell out of imperial favour a certain Theodoric Strabo, the leader of a band of Goths who had sought service under the Romans. Heather
argues that some of his troops were Goths settled in the Balkans earlier than
the ‘demise’ of the Huns in the West in ad 454.
With his ragtag force
Theodoric holds the empire to ransom for over ten years until his death in ad
481, not from Roman vengeance, but a nasty fall from his horse while
pillaging Rome’s Balkan territories. He had the good luck to be sure of
having another band of Goths under Thiudimer, Theodoric Amal’s father
and brother of Valamer, enter the scene after ad 471 and cause trouble in
Macedonia. But even when we combine their two armies we have barely
20,000 Goths and allies. Thiudimer, as we shall see later, was not leading a
band of conquering Goths as Jordanes’ distorted account would have us
believe, but actually a group of defeated warriors who had been expelled from
the Danubian region by the Suebi, Rugi, Sciri, Heruli and Gepids.
Compared to the mighty hosts of the Attilid Huns and the Persians, this
was a paltry force that Rome in its better days before the Hunnic invasions
could easily have annihilated. Not so, however, in the 470s.
Thiudimer penetrates the Balkans right up to the gates of Thessalonica on
the coast of the Aegean without meeting any effective Roman resistance The
Romans were simply too busy dealing with Theodoric Strabo’s Thracian
Goths (barely 10,000 strong). Only at Thessalonica is Thiudimer stopped,
but not beaten. The other Goths under Strabo attack Adrianople and

Philippopolis, again without meeting an imperial army. In ad 473 the
empire, supposedly mighty, pays off both bands with bribes. Theodoric
Strabo, who is closer to the capital and thus a greater threat, is given a bribe
of 2,000 pounds of gold per annum, almost the amount given to Attila the
Hun personally (Malchus fr. 2, p. 408.22 ff.), and Thiudimer is given lands in
Macedonia. What has happened to the Eastern Roman army? Where is it?
The answer is that it hardly exists as a viable fighting force in the
Balkans.379 The only ‘Eastern Roman’ army around Constantinople is
actually Theodoric Strabo’s Goths in revolt (!) and a force of probably
comparable numbers under the Isaurian general Illus who sets up Zeno, a
fellow Isaurian, on the throne (after initially having favoured the coup
d’état of Basiliscus (ad 474–6)
381) and then plays the role of Aspar (the
former kingmaker). In ad 478 Zeno tries to put together an army to tackle
Strabo, 50,000 on paper, but including c. 10,000 or fewer Goths under
Theodoric the Amal. It turns out that no army can in reality be put together.
Troops simply don’t turn up or desert en masse(Malchus fr. 18.2, p. 426.
1–2) and the Amals find themselves alone against the Thracian Goths under
Strabo. Heather argues that Zeno was trying to play a double game and
to set off one band of Goths against the other. Indeed maybe he was, but
the very fact that he needed to resort to such underhand tactics tells us
something about the state of the Roman army in the Balkans.
Theodoric Amal feeling betrayed marches on Constantinople and
then despite Heather’s unrealistic emphasis on the fallback plan of Zeno,
supposedly to trap the Goths as they retreated, the tiny army of Theodoric
after making a brief demonstration before the imperial capital marches off
virtually unscathed across the length of the entire Balkans to the Adriatic
Sea where he seizes the port city of Dyrrhachium in ad 479.
The
Romans need to resort to Hunoulphus (the son of the Hunnic noble
Edeco and brother of Odoacer) and the troops he led into Illyricum to
inflict a minor loss on a column of Goths led by Theodoric’s brother
Theodimundus at Candavia. To deal with the other Goths under
Strabo/Triarius, Zeno turns to the Huns now called Bulgars. They
attack Strabo in 480, but for some mysterious reason make little impression on the Goths. Strabo probably bribed them off with more money
than the Romans had offered them. Strabo then, still unscathed, like his
namesake Theodoric the Amal, marches on Constantinople, threatens the
imperial city, and like the previous horde marches away virtually uncontested to the western Balkans. In the space of three years two small Gothic
armies roamed the entire breadth and length of the Balkans and twice
threatened Constantinople without meeting a significant Roman force

other than those situated before the capital itself. It is clear that even these
troops at the capital were nowhere near numerous enough to even actively
pursue the Goths once they withdrew.
In ad 483/4 Theodoric Amal, taking advantage of the accidental death of
his rival Strabo in 481388 and having assassinated Strabo’s successor
Recitach, unites the Goths into a single army of some 20,000 warriors.
The empire is powerless before this relatively small army. Zeno grants the
Amal Goths land in Dacia Ripensis and Lower Moesia and appoints
Theodoric MVM Praesentalis and consul for 484 (Marcellinus Comes
s.a. 483 (CM ii.92)). Four years later in ad 487 Theodoric again attacks
Constantinople, this time setting up his camp at Rhegium and harrying the
city’s suburbs. The Goths even cut a major aqueduct. Again the imperial
army in any substantial numbers is nowhere to be seen other than within
Constantinople. Zeno has to make a pact with Theodoric and induce him
to leave the Balkans, probably devastated by decades of warfare and pillaging and therefore no longer a desirable place to the Goths, for the acquisition of the realm of another Hunno-Germanic potentate, Odoacer of
Italy.

Τελικά τους πρήστηκε η πούτσα τους Γότθους και πήγανε στην Ιταλία να ρίξουν άλλες.

"Ρωμαίοι" αφήστε ρε τις αυτοκρατορίες γιατί δεν το έχετε και ασχοληθείτε με τον τουρισμό καλύτερα. Αφού τουρισμό κάνανε και τότε τα τσογλάνια οι Γερμανοί που τόσο αγαπάτε στις χώρες σας.
