THE SMITHS – HOW SOON IS NOW? (1985)

Issued originally as the b-side of 1984’s ‘William, It was really nothing’, the track received its own A-side release the following year.

‘How soon is now?’ was Johnny Marr’s recent interest in the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival married to his earlier influences: Hamilton Bohannon's 1975 UK top ten hit `Disco Stomp', Krautrock visionaries Can’s ‘I want more’ and the tremolo guitar and hambone rhythms of blues guitarist Bo Diddley.

The song began life as a demo called ‘Swamp’, much lighter in tone than the eventual single. It wasn’t until the band began to jam with it in the studio that the track took on its familiar hypnotic, trippy vibe, a transformation facilitated by producer John Porter creating the tremolo effect manually on traditional analogue equipment.

Absent for the first session, Morrissey joined the band back in the studio the next day and laid down his powerful vocal in just a couple of takes. The singer drew on his love for George Eliot's Middlemarch as inspiration for the opening line— 'to be born the son of a Middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular' — while the song's title was taken from Marjorie Rosen's 1973 book of feminist film history, Popcorn Venus: 'How immediately can we be gratified? How soon is "now".'

The end result was a six-minutes-plus sonic epic, one that remains today a major foundation of influence and a key moment in redefining masculine sensibility.

The video here is the unauthorised music video made by Sire Records to promote the song. It intercut clips of the band playing live (including a shot of Johnny Marr showing Morrissey how to play the guitar), an industrial part of a city, and a girl dancing.

The band were not pleased by the result. Morrissey told Creem in 1985, "We saw the video and we said to Sire, 'You can't possibly release this... this degrading video.' And they said, 'Well, maybe you shouldn't really be on our label.' It was quite disastrous".

Nonetheless, the video has been credited with helping make the song their most famous in the United States, along with heavy exposure on college radio.
