Spain: A Moroccan driver in arrested on suspicion of killing a pro-migrant German woman
There has been a dramatic turn in the case of a German hitchhiker, Sophia Lösche, who disappeared after hitchhiking from Leipzig: the police now think that she was murdered. The driver of the truck from whom Lösche had accepted a ride last Thursday (14 June) at the Aral service station in Schkeuditz was arrested yesterday in Spain. The driver is believed to have killed the missing woman, the Leipzig police said in a statement released yesterday evening.
This morning, Sophia’s brother, Andreas Lösche, who is a Bavarian politician with the Greens party, announced on Facebook that the driver had been found in Spain. The man allegedly told the Lösche family that he had parted ways with Sophia at around 8 PM on Thursday, when leaving Hersbruck from the A9.
The Leipzig police had appealed to the Spanish police for assistance, and a Spanish judge issued an arrest warrant for the driver of the truck, who according to the Spanish authorities is Moroccan. An anonymous judicial source has stated that the man was arrested after attempting to flee to his country.
Sophie Lösche herself had actually been a pro-migrant activist. In 2016 she had spent time on the Greek island of Lesbos, where she was working with the “Kitchens without Borders” migrant assistance organization.
“I wish I could go everywhere. I would like to see the world and know it, ” Lösche said at the time. “There is is no right to distinguish between war refugees and economic refugees.”
