Shell and BP are projected to be the UK stock market’s two largest dividend payers this year. Shell has long held the mantle as the largest, while BP is set to move from third to second position, overtaking HSBC (HSBA) after banks bowed to pressure from the Bank of England and cancelled their payouts.
The sector accounted for 11% of the FTSE 350 last year but 20% of dividends paid by companies on the index. The oil majors’ projected 2020 payouts have swelled as a proportion of the UK stock market’s total as dividends have been slashed amid the coronavirus pandemic, with banks and insurers delivering the deepest cuts.
Shell and BP’s combined projected payout of £18.5bn represents nearly 30% of the £64bn in dividends expected from UK-listed companies this year.
Dividend determination
Both oil giants have kept quiet on their dividends since the coronavirus outbreak, suggesting they intend to proceed with the payouts, with all eyes on upcoming trading statements for BP next Tuesday and Shell on Thursday next week. Shell last month announced it had secured a $12bn new credit facility in a bid to safeguard its dividend.
Cuts to the dividend would be a historic move, particularly in the case of Shell, which has kept paying dividends since World War Two. BP last cut its dividend in the aftermath of the Deep Water Horizon spill in 2010.
Jon Rigby, analyst at UBS, said he expected Shell management to be ‘robust defenders of their dividend through this cycle’.
‘We could envisage further capital expenditure cuts before it would contemplate and pull back from the dividend commitment,’ he said, adding it was ‘too soon’ for oil majors to cut payouts despite the pressure from falling oil prices.
‘Our belief is that first quarter reporting season will see the dividends announced and paid in line with existing distribution policy,’ he said.
‘Company distribution policy is supposedly designed to reward investors through the cycle and is based upon long-term trend. Consequently, we see an immediate cut as looking highly opportunistic.’
