Russian military personnel have entered an air base in Niger that is hosting U.S. troops, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters, a move that follows a decision by Niger to expel U.S. forces from the country.

The West African nation have told the U.S. to withdraw its nearly 1,000 military personnel from the country.

A senior U.S. defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russian forces were not mingling with U.S. troops but were using a separate hanger at Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger's capital.

The move by Russia's military puts U.S. and Russian troops in close proximity at a time when the nations' military and diplomatic rivalry is increasingly acrimonious over the conflict in Ukraine.

It also raises questions about the fate of U.S. installations in the country following a withdrawal.
"(The situation) is not great but in the short-term manageable," the official said.

American troops in Niger have declared “increased readiness” due to the deployment of Russian specialists at the same base as them, the African country’s security forces reported

The Russians were stationed at the 101st Air Base next to the Americans. About 150 Italian soldiers and about 100 Germans also serve there.

Παραμένει πρώτο με 40% (έναντι 57% στις εκλογές του 2019) αλλά πλέον θα χρειαστεί να συγκυβερνήσει - πιθανότατα με το δεύτερο DA (που έχει 22%). H συγκυβέρνηση με το MK, το κόμμα του πρώην Προέδρου Jacob Zuma που είναι στο 15%, φαντάζει ιδιαίτερα δύσκολη. Το τέταρτο κόμμα (EFF) είναι στο 9% οπότε δεν αρκεί συνεργασία των ANC και EFF για να σχηματιστεί κυβέρνηση μια που είναι απαραίτητο τουλάχιστον 50%.

Η Νότια Αφρική περνάει έτσι σε μια φάση κυβερνήσεων συνεργασίας, η οποία προβλέπεται μάλλον μόνιμη από τη στιγμή που κανένα κόμμα δεν φαίνεται να έχει πλέον δυνατότητες για ποσοστά άνω του 50%.
