This branch originates on 13 November 1918 when the Revolutionary Military Council issued an order No. 220 to establish the first chemical service of the Red Army; bodies and units of chemical protection were formed.

The NBC Protection Troops determine and estimate an NBC situation, conduct active decontamination of forces, decontaminate areas, roads, and fortifications, employ aerosols to set camouflage, fire flame throwing components to engage the enemy, and provide disaster relief of dangerous facilities.

Today, the NBC Protection Troops include combat support formations and units stationed in military districts, large-scale units of services and branches, units and organisations subordinate to the central office including scientific organisations and centres. On a daily basis, hundreds of servicemen undergo training and studying in Kostroma, Yekaterinburg, Kursk, Saratov, and Moscow regions etc.

The present-day NBC Protection Troops have Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological reconnaissance, aerosol countermeasures, active decontamination, flamethrower, and NBC repair units as well as analytical stations. The troops are equipped with automated control and robotic systems, and special-designed assets as UAVs and remote-controlled NBC reconnaissance stations.

The NBC Protection Troops are armed with TOS-1A Solntsepyok and TOS-2 Tosochka heavy flamethrower systems with an extended firing range and a killing area unmatched in the world. Moreover, the flamethrower units are enhanced with reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicles.

Thanks to the decisiveness of flamethrower units and heavy flamethrower systems, the Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops ensure that motorised rifle units perform tasks in order to eliminate the enemy in the most important areas of the line of contact. Servicemen of the NBC Protection Troops are on combat alert duty at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and provide radiological security for Russian units and civilians. Repair units restore weapons and hardware of the Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops promptly.

Four brigades and four regiments of the Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Protection Troops have been awarded the title of Guards during the special military operation. Four officers have been awarded the highest title of Hero of the Russian Federation and 4,563 servicemen have received state and departmental awards, including 320 officers who got of the Order of Courage.
