How Alex Soros, 37, Won The Battle For Control Of Dad’s Empire

George Soros’ son Alex, 37, has been named as the heir to his father’s $25 billion empire — but for a long time insiders thought his older brother Jonathan, 53, was ready to take the reins.

Over the past decade, George has gone from a younger Soros heir known for throwing lavish parties in the Hamptons to his father’s chosen one. Meanwhile, his older brother, a lawyer with a background in finance, largely disappeared from the public eye.

It’s unclear exactly how and why power shifted, but in his first interview since the new appointment, George told The Wall Street Journal that after a while he and Jonathan “didn’t get along.”

Jonathan, now removed from his father’s business, said he was “disappointed but not sorry” at the outcome, which puts Alex in charge of his father’s influential Open Society Foundation (OSF), a huge financier of liberal goals, and the rest of his empire.

The battle for control of the Soros empire is reminiscent of the TV series ‘Succession’, in which a family fought for control of a media empire. In the show, the children made plans to run the company.

Alex will now be in charge of the Empire, once thought to be a “long shot” to take over. He was once known more for his lifestyle than for his activity in the political world.

In 2016, Alex was portrayed in the media as a playboy billionaire scion. The Jewish publication Forward wrote that year that he “shuttled models” to and from his $85 million summer rental home in the Hamptons.

Now the coverage is different. During the Journal interview, Alex claimed to be more “political” than his father and outlined how he would shape his father’s empire to defend issues such as reproductive rights and voting rights.

A hedge fund manager turned philanthropist and major financier of liberal causes, Soros was born in Hungary in 1930 and has five children by two women.

He made his fortune as a prominent hedge fund investor, notably making about $1 billion after betting against the British pound in 1992.

While the 92-year-old once said he didn’t want OSF to be passed on to any of his children, insiders have said they believed Jonathan was the likely heir, thanks in part to his age and experience.

He attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut and graduated in 1992, after which he worked at a Soros foundation office in Hungary.

He went on to earn prestigious degrees in law and public policy from Harvard, then joined the Soros investment firm in 2002, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Jonathan, who is tall and athletic, once played tennis with his father and helped stabilize the Soros hedge fund during hard times.

“I expected Jonathan to be the one,” Aryeh Neier, president of Open Society Foundations from 1993 to 2012, told the Journal.

Jonathan admitted that he thought he would take over.

“I always knew he could change his mind,” Jonathan told The Journal. “As a trader, that’s what he’s most famous for.”

Others who worked with the father and son said the two often clash — George could be impulsive, while Jonathan was analytical, insiders told the Journal.

It is speculated that things reached a boiling point in 2011, when the pair disagreed about taking senior positions.

“We couldn’t agree on certain points,” George said. “That became clear to both of us, especially him, and he wanted to go out on his own.”

Jonathan now lives with his family in Manhattan and told the paper that despite all promises, his business relationship with his father has ended on reasonable terms.

“We ended our business relationship on pretty good terms,” said Jonathan. “I was disappointed, but I had no regrets.”

The two are now “friendly but not close,” according to the Journal.

However, Alex seems to be closer than ever to his father. George appears in numerous photos with his 37-year-old son and the two routinely arm-in-arm.

“He deserved it,” George said of Alex’s appointment.

The OSF board elected Alex as chairman in December and Alex now leads political activities as chairman of the Soros political action committee.

The foundation donates about $1.5 billion a year to groups such as human rights activists and “constructive democracies.”

Alex generally embraces the same leftist politics as his father.

Alex was known for years for his flamboyant lifestyle, picking up models and befriending NBA legends.

In 2021, Page Six reported leaving a $700 tip after buying tequila at a Brooklyn bar during a night spent with two women.

More recently, Alex has started to cultivate a more professional image. He has already visited the White House 14 times in just over a year and has been photographed with dozens of well-known Democrats.

They include Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and Senator Chuck Schumer – whom he called a “good friend.”

Speaking of his goals, Alex said he was concerned about the possibility of Republican Donald Trump returning to the White House – suggesting the family will be a big contributor to the Democrats in the 2024 presidential election.

“As much as I’d like to get money out of politics, as long as the other side is doing it, we’ll have to do it too,” he said.

However, Alex has said he doesn’t support every left wing cause. Unlike others on the left, he said he thinks freedom of speech on campus has become too restricted.

“I have some differences with my generation regarding freedom of speech and other things,” he said.

“After all, I grew up watching Bill Maher before I went to bed,” he noted, referring to the TV personality who has spoken out against restrictions on free speech on college campuses.
