Australian Government Executes Rescue Dogs To Prevent The Spread Of COVID

A rural council in New South Wales, a state on the east coast of Australia, shot and killed multiple impounded dogs over COVID-19 concerns, which prompted a government investigation, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The Bourke Shire Council killed the dogs to prevent volunteers at an animal shelter based in the town of Cobar from traveling to pick them up, the council’s watchdog, the Office of Local Government, told The Sydney Morning Herald.

As Australian health officials encourage eligible high school students to get vaccinated for COVID-19 before upcoming in-person exams, social media users are spreading false claims that their efforts involve forcibly injecting children.

The posts have amassed millions of views this week and penetrated every major social media platform. Among them are a video of a police incident misrepresented as the involuntary vaccination of a young child, and a baseless rumor that the government planned to "seize" 24,000 students against their will and immunize them by force in a stadium.

Children are not required to get vaccinated for COVID-19 in Australia, Australia's health department confirms. Young children aren't even eligible yet.

In August 2021, government officials in the state of New South Wales (NSW) announced that, in addition to adults of most age brackets, high school students aged between 16 and 18 would soon be invited to get their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the Qudos Arena (also known as the Super Dome) in the state capital of Sydney.

Mindful that high school students are expected to sit the Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams in October, officials in the state urged that cohort of students to get vaccinated in order to facilitate the smooth running of the exams, and prevent further outbreaks.

Against that background, at the Aug. 6 daily COVID-19 briefing, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced that:

From Monday next week [i.e. Aug. 9], at Qudos Bank Arena, HSC students in those eight local government areas will be invited to get the Pfizer jab, and most of those students are between the ages of 16 and 18 years of age. And we do encourage all students to make sure they come forward for that opportunity because, obviously, by the time everybody sits for the HSC exam, which is a requirement, we want every student from those eight local government areas to have been offered the vaccine and to have taken the vaccine.
