The Economist writes: “Arctic waters are becoming increasingly lively. The most popular shipping route is the Northern Sea Route, which is controlled by Russia. From 2014 to 2022 trade volumes increased by 755%. Russia wants traffic volumes to increase 10 times their 2022 levels by 2035. In October it announced a joint venture with Emirati logistics company DP World to develop Arctic container shipping. That same month, Chinese shipping firm NewNew Shipping Line made its first round trip on the Arctic route between Shanghai and St. Petersburg.”
